The Brooklyn Collection Room

Introduction

The Brooklyn Collection is Brooklyn Public Library's local history division, providing a full range of reference services, educational activities, programs and exhibitions. All of this is made possible by a collection that includes books, maps, photographs, newspapers, ephemera, prints, and newspaper clippings, and by a staff dedicated to making these resources widely accessible both online and in the Collection's beautiful newly-built facility on the second floor of the Central Library. This important resource provides information to researchers around the world as well as to local students, genealogists, journalists and filmmakers.

Sanborn Insurance Maps Digital Sanborn Maps for New York State

Digital Sanborn Maps for New York State are now available in the Reserve Room of the Brooklyn Collection during the Division's open hours. Sanborn Maps are large scale fire insurance plans containing information such as the size and shape of each building, construction materials, heights and functions of structures, location of windows and doors, street names, sidewalk widths, property boundaries, names of factories and commerical buildings, block and lot numbers and more. Some areas are represented in seven or eight different editions. The sheets for Brooklyn cover the years 1886-1951.

The online version of the Sanborn Maps represents a significant improvement in accessibility over the microfilm maps. They are invaluable tools for urban historians, architects, geographers, genealogists, local historians, planners, environmentalists, home-owners and anyone interested in the growth of American cities.

Call 718 230 2762 during open hours for an appointment, or stop by to use the maps on a first-come-first-served basis with the understanding that appointments have priority.

Planning your visit

Feel free to walk in during our open hours to visit our browsing collection, view our exhibits and familiarize yourself with our materials.

Our mission is to provide free access to information on the rich heritage of our community. Most materials are fragile and unique; items do not circulate and many cannot be photocopied or photographed with flash. Scanning equipment is not allowed.

A source of identification, such as a school ID, drivers license or library card, must be provided to access all materials except those in our browsing section. With a Brooklyn Public Library card and PIN number, photocopies of specified materials may be made in our division for a fee.

Many of our materials are available for your use when you arrive, but it is recommended to contact the Brooklyn Collection before you visit. With advance notice, staff can discuss your needs and set materials aside for your use. For access to original photographs, ephemera and manuscript collections, you must call in advance for an appointment during our open hours at 718.230.2762.
